If you are not a native English speaker, you might want to use apps in your language. That includes any software, starting from your operating system to your favorite Office productivity suite and your primary web browser. If your browser of choice is Mozilla Firefox and you do not know how to change its user interface language, then you should read this guide. We show you two ways to get Firefox working in any language that you want:

NOTE: We assume that you already have Mozilla Firefox installed but it is not in the language that you want.

1. Download Mozilla Firefox in your language

The first and probably the easiest method to use Mozilla Firefox is to download it directly in your language and install it on top of the existing Firefox installation. To do that, visit this official Firefox website: Download Firefox in your language . It looks like this:

On this website, you can download Firefox in any of the 90 languages that it supports. To do so, enter the name of the language you want in the «Search languages» field, or scroll until you find it in the list beneath it.

After you find the language that you want, look on its right side. There, you have a series of links for Firefox, all in that language, but for different operating systems. Click or tap on the one that matches your operating system and its version (64-bit or 32-bit), and the download starts. For example, we want Firefox to use Romanian as display language, and we are using Windows 10 64-bit, so we have to download the Romanian Windows 64-bit version of Firefox.

NOTE: If you do not know what version of Windows you have, this guide can help you figure it out: What version of Windows do I have installed? .

Once you download the Firefox installer file, run it and follow the steps of the install wizard. In the end, you should have a fully functional Firefox that displays its user interface in the language that you chose.

2. Download a language pack for Mozilla Firefox’s user interface and enable it in its settings

Another method that works just as well and which some people might prefer is to download, install and enable a language pack for their Mozilla Firefox browser. Open Firefox and visit this website: Firefox Add-ons — Dictionaries and Language Packs . It looks like this:

On it, there is a long list with all the languages in which Firefox’s interface can be used. Scroll down until you find the one you want, and then click or tap the Language Pack link to its right.

The previous action takes you to that language pack’s webpage. On it, click or tap the «+ Add to Firefox» button.

Firefox now asks if you want to add that language pack (add-on) to Firefox. Click or tap Add to continue.

After the language pack has been added to your Firefox, click or tap on OK to close the dialog.

Now, all it remains for us to do is to enable the new language and make Firefox use it for its user interface.

To do so, open a new tab and type about:config in its address bar. Then press Enter on your keyboard.

Firefox might show a warning that «This might void your warranty!» because you are about to change advanced settings. This warning may not be in English, but in a different language, depending on what you have installed on your PC. Click or tap «I accept the risk!» or the only blue button that you see.

Firefox shows you a long list with advanced settings that you can change. It looks like this:

In the Search field at the top, type intl.locale.requested or copy and paste this text. This filters the list of settings and should show only one setting, named intl.locale.requested. Double-click or double-tap on it and Firefox opens a small window in which the current display language code is shown. For example, if Firefox is now using US English, you should see en-us.

Delete the current language code and, in its place, type the code of the language pack that you want to switch to. Then, click or tap on OK. For example, we want Firefox to use Romanian as a display language, and its code is ro. So, we have to type ro and press OK.

If you do not know the code for the language pack that you have installed and wanted to activate, you can find the list of all the language codes here: Mozilla Web Localization Dashboard .

Once you entered the language code and pressed OK, all that remains for you to do is close Firefox completely (all its windows) and restart it. When you restart it, Firefox is using the new display language.

What to do if you do not find the «intl.locale.requested» setting in the «about:config» tab

There are situations that we also stumbled upon, in which Firefox does not show you anything when you are searching for the intl.locale.requested setting in the about:config tab. We know for sure that this happens in the last version of Firefox that we used: Firefox 61 (64-bit).

However, that does not mean that you cannot use this method to change the display language. There is, however, an additional step that you must perform, and that is to create the intl.locale.requested setting yourself. In the about:config tab, right-click anywhere in the list of settings (or on any setting), and you should see a small contextual menu. In it, click or tap on New and then String. If Firefox is in a language that you do not understand, click the only option with an arrow on its right (it is the fifth when going from top to bottom), and then in the submenu that opens, choose the first value from the top. This is always the equivalent of choosing New and then String.

In the «New string value» window, type intl.locale.requested, and then press OK.

Firefox then asks you to «Enter string value.» Type the language code for the language pack that you installed previously and which you want Firefox to use to display the user interface.

Click or tap OK and restart Firefox. Then, your favorite web browser displays its user interface in the new language that you installed and enabled.

Change the language Office uses in its menus and proofing tools

Our virtual agent can help find solutions for your Office change language questions.

In today’s global, and multicultural, economy we often find users who want to work in other languages. In this article we’ll show you how to get Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, or other Office apps to work in the language, or languages, that you want to work in.

There are three basic types of languages in Microsoft Office that you can change.

Editing or Authoring is the language in which you type and edit your content. You may need to install an associated keyboard for this language via Windows settings.

Proofing tools do the spelling and grammar check. Typically you’ll set this language to be the same as the editing or authoring language.

Display language is all of the buttons, menus and controls in Office. This is sometimes known as the «user interface» langauge or «UI».

You can set both display and editing or authoring language to be the same, or you can set them to be different languages if you prefer. Maybe you want your buttons and controls to be in French but you need to type documents in German, for example.

Note: If you want to completely change Office, permanently, to a different language you’ll get the best results if you first set that to be your default display language in Windows as well. For more information on doing that see this article for Windows 10 or this article for Windows 7 or 8.

In Office the language options are in the Set the Office Language Preferences dialog box. The display and help languages can be set independently. For example, you could have everything match the language of your operating system, or you could use a combination of languages for your operating system, editing, display, and Help.

Editing and Proofing

Within any Office application, select File > Options > Language.

If your language already appears among the editing languages press Set as Default. Otherwise select the language from the Add additional editing languages list then press the Add button. The new language will appear in the list of editing languages.

If the Keyboard Layout shows as Enabled you’re all set for editing. If it says Not enabled in the Keyboard Layout column follow these steps to enable it:

Click the Not enabled link.

In the Add Languages dialog box, press Add a language, select your language in the list, and then press Add.

Close the Add Languages dialog box. Your language should display as Enabled under Keyboard Layout in the Choose Editing Languages section.

Under Proofing, if your language shows as Installed you’re ready to go. Otherwise press Not installed and Office will take you to a page where you can download the necessary Language Accessory Pack for that language. Follow the instructions on that page to download and install the pack, then come back to the Office Language Preferences dialog box to confirm that it’s now installed.

Note: If you’re using Office in the Microsoft Store, pressing Not installed will take you to Windows Language Settings where you can select your desired language and it will be downloaded, if necessary, automatically.

Display and Help Languages

Within any Office application, select File > Options > Language.

If you’ve already set your Microsoft Windows display language to be the language you want Office to display in you can leave this set to Match Microsoft Windows. Otherwise select your language and press Set as Default to move that language to the top of the list. The language that is listed first is the one Office will use for its menus and buttons. Please note, if your Windows display language is not also installed in Office, your Office display language will appear in the next language in the display list.

Note: If you’re using Office in the Microsoft Store and you want to change your default display language go to the Region and Language settings in Windows 10. Click the language you want to set as the default, and choose Set as default.

Repeat to configure your help language if you want to.

If the language you want isn’t available.

Download the proper Language Accessory Pack for the language you want to use from this page: Language Accessory Pack for Office. The Language Accessory Pack contains the display and proofing tools for most languages, but you can still choose to have your display in one language and editing in another.

Microsoft Office for Mac already contains all of the available languages, so there’s nothing to download. To configure Office to use those languages follow these steps:

User Interface — The display language for Office for Mac follows the language that your operating system is set to.

You can configure this on OS X by going to the Apple menu, choosing System Preferences > Language & Region and setting the desired language to be your primary language by dragging it to the top of the Preferred languages list.

If the language you want doesn’t appear just press the + sign and add it.

You’ll probably have to restart your Office application in order for ths change to take effect.

Editing — To change your editing language for this file in Office for Mac go to Tools > Language, select your language, and click OK.

To make it the default for all new documents click Default.

User Interface & Editing — The display and keyboard languages for Office for Android is the same as the language that the device is set to. You can configure those by going to Settings > Language and Input.

Proofing — On Android you can change the proofing language in Word.

In Word on your Android phone, tap the Edit icon at the top of your screen, and then tap Proofing and Language under Review.

In Word on your Android tablet go to the Review tab and you can select your proofing language from the ribbon.

User Interface & Editing — The display and keyboard languages for Office for iOS are the same as the language that the device is set to. See Change the language on your iPhone or iPad for instructions.

Tip: If you’re using a personal Microsoft account, you can choose your preferred display language in your profile settings at https://account.microsoft.com/profile.

Change views on OneDrive (Scroll to the bottom for language settings)

Set your language in SharePoint. If you’re using SharePoint, and want a language other than your system language, you’ll want to be sure to select a SharePoint language.

To set the proofing tools language in your app go to the Review tab > Spelling & Grammar > Set Proofing Language. In OneNote for the web this is found on the Home tab.

Set Proofing Language» />

This change will only take affect from this point in the document forward.

To apply this change to any existing text in the document, press CTRL+A to select all of the existing text, then set the proofing language with the steps above.

This change only affects the current document. For subsequent documents you’ll need to repeat these steps.
